House System

One of the aims of the House system at Derwent Lower is to give the children a sense of belonging.

There are four Houses – Birch (blue), Alder (green), Willow (yellow) and Hawthorn (red).  These are named after trees that can be found in the school grounds. All the children are allocated a House when they join us and they will spend all their time with us in that one House. Siblings are always together.

Each term there is a House competition which is decided by the School Council.  These range from Poetry writing to Sports Day.  Children gain points by entering competitions and are awarded points for being placed first, second or third.  On Sports Day children wear their House Colours when competing.

Another aim of the House system is to reward the children for their achievements.  They can earn House Points for their school work.  These are totalled each half term and the House Stars are set on their steps accordingly.  At the end of the year there is a winning House.
